Society of Thoracic Surgeons

The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) National Database was established in 1989 as an initiative for quality improvement and patient safety among cardiothoracic surgeons. This database has participants in 11 countries including all 50 of the United States. The Adult Cardiac Database houses approximately 6.9 million patient records and represents more than 90% of the groups that perform cardiac surgery in the United States.

Registry Partners supports hospitals across the United States with three areas of cardiothoracic surgery in the database:

  • Adult Cardiac Surgery
  • General Thoracic Surgery
  • Congenital Heart Surgery
  • Intermacs

Hospitals are able to voluntarily report their STS data to the public on the STS website. This allows the public to compare medical centers or surgical groups with national benchmarks for overall performance, survival, complications, and other measures. Participants who publicly report their data are also given credit by U.S. News and World Report when compiling their list of the best hospitals.
